The first social meal of the season last night. Well, to be honest, it was a meal which could not get organised in the summer as too many people were away. So although we had the festive menu we did not have to have all the festive trappings.
It is a group SW… belongs to - she is the only woman member, and they discuss finance and invest in shares - but the partners of members come to the meal - and there is the taking of much wine.
The food was good, and the company was good - but when I got home I found my clothes smelt of stale food - as if I had been in a kitchen where chips were being cooked. That is really odd since we were nowhere near the kitchen, and there were no chips - but the stale smell is still on my jacket this morning.
Meanwhile Back Friday has arrived in earnest in the UK. An ‘American custom’ as it has been described on the news. Basically daft people ripping stuff off shelves, fighting with each othe and being arrested by the police. Much of what will be bought today will not actually be discounted - but the urge to but becomes a mania. Of course, this has nothing to do with Christmas - but seems to be the official start of the consumer festival.
And, joy of joy, the politician Andrew Mitchell who was accused of calling policemen at the gates of Downing Street ‘fucking plebs’ - he said he did not use the word plebs - but admitted to swearing when they did not let him take his bike through the main gate - after two years, and counter libel claims a judge has accepted that Mitchell did say ‘plebs’. The policeman who reported this has been vindicated. Mitchell had lost his government post already over the issue - and now may have a bill for a couple of million pounds in legal costs. I did not like him anyway - but he could have accepted it at the time and moved on.
Why was ‘plebs’ such a bad word? Because it demeaned the policemen, and showed contempt for those below him - which I guess he felt - as do many politicians - It seems using the word fucking is OK but pleb is not.
EDIT The ginger cat has had to be put down - many tears - RIP

I can't believe Black Friday as all up in the UK. Ugh, the worst.

Here in the US, one can take great advantage of black friday and not have to deal with crowds if one is willing to stay up late. I never sleep, so my husband and I went to Macy's at midnight, where many many things were hugely discounted. Even got lancome makeup sets for my sisters on sale, and those only go on sale on black friday. The dirty trick is that most of the doorbuster prices end at 1 pm on black friday itself, so by the time most people get there, much less is on sale. After midnight, at the very start of black friday, not nearly as many people are in macy's. By like 2 am, it's extremely peaceful. Between that and getting black friday deals online, I think I got well over half of my christmas shopping done last night, and paid at least 60% less than full price for each item. It's all about how you work the system.
I am deeply saddened to hear about the ginger cat. Was rooting for him. My condolences to your neighbors...
