A couple of days ago my sister finally agreed to take Missy to the vet to be put down. The vet didn’t want to do it right at Thanksgiving ( Of course, because we would enjoy the holiday so much more watching her stumble around the yard suffering. :( :( :( )
Anyway, long story short - they decided to put her on some new food to put some weight on and go back after Thanksgiving. Well, Missy, in her very Missy fashion decided it for them. Day before yesterday my mom watched her slowly make her way up the hill in the pasture and into the woods. My mom called her back, Missy turned, walked a few steps, then went on into the woods. This afternoon my sister found her. She had found her place, her peace, and had passed away. My heart breaks. She’s been part of our family for almost 18 years. There’s a million memories with her. Unfortunately, not a million pictures. She HATED having her picture taken. She’d be bouncing and playing, then the camera would come out and she would get the most pained look on her face. Poor Old Girl. We just took ‘em anyway.

*More details - I found out the rest of the details this morning. About 10 feet into the woods where my mom so her go in is steep hill. I’ve slid down it before as a kid and it’s a rough ride. It’s about 20 feet straight down. At this time of year, everything back there is covered in pine straw and slick as can be. The creek runs at the base of the hill. (As a kid, I thought it was a great idea to slide into the creek. I’m lucky I didn’t break my neck.) They found Missy in the creek at the bottom of that hill. Of course we don’t know if she fell, slid, or rolled, but I’m thinking rolled. I figure she couldn’t see the hill and stumbled. It’s possible she broke her neck on the way down. So, the ending wasn’t as peaceful as we could have hoped, but faster than we thought. It looks like within minutes of my mom seeing her go in, she was gone. My dad had looked in that area, but she was so emaciated at the end, and black....he missed her. My sister saw her when they were walking and thought it was a tire. Those float in from neighbors occasionally. On their way back, with the different angle, they saw the blaze on her chest. She’s now buried with the rest by the creek. I think my brother in law is making the cross. If not, my dad will. *
