Mr Turner was the film I thought it would be, well acted and wonderful visuals. A lot of work went into getting the look right, it was a time before electric lighting, so lighting inside was from windows or candles, it was the same with the script, it was English as spoke in the time of Turner; I think – hope!
The cast were very good, and I say that knowing nothing of the cast bar two, Timothy Spall as William turner and James Fleet as John Constable; so I imagine mostly the actors are from our rich theatrical pool who walk the stages of our theatres.
The film doesn’t flinch from showing the darker side of life in the early nineteen century, Turner dose abuse his housekeeper Hannah Danby, I doubt it was rear then, I expect many of the female staff putt up with abuse rather than lose steady work; a time when being poor was difficult – and it was unlikely then that the complaints of staff would be taken series then.
Even in a film like this CDI makes an appearance, Turner is seen in a small steam boat with friends, across the water an old battle ship – the Temeraire – is being taken to be broken up by a steam tug. The Temeraire and the tug were computer generated, as for the little craft conveying Turner and friends; I’m not sure as such is the capabilities of CDI these days.
This lead to Turner’s painting ‘The fighting Temeraire Tugged to her Last Berth to be Broken Up’ Title or description I’m not sure

‘Mr Turner’ the film is a wonderful window, showing us a view of life as lived two hundred years ago, if difficult to watch at moments; I would love to see Timothy Spall going home with the best actor Oscar next year …….
