I had 7 subscribers.
One day later I have 66.
Sometimes the internet delivers.
Truth is, on Bob’s Utopia I am authentic. Consistent too. And I know from personal experience that we build a bond with the people we watch on YouTube (just like we build a bond with the people we follow here.) I used to watch the vanlifers and I used to watch the Foreigners in Taiwan videos. They became like friends. I took an interest in what they were learning, what their apartment looked like… So I get it.
When I asked my subscribers to Bob’s Utopia to watch my new walking around channel (Where’s Bob Walking?), they said they would. 59 people said they would. I expect there will be a few more. I have a strong bond with some of them.
On a recent video I broke down my three main viewer groups.
The first and the biggest are the viewers who use the Mandarin subtitles. I think I can safely say that these are my ‘Taiwanese” viewers. They make up about 80% of the total.
The other 20%, the important 20%, the 20% that are most like me, that I appreciate and connect with best fall into two groups:
The biggest part of this group is overseas Taiwanese. These people watch my Youtube channel because they are, for lack of a better word - homesick.
The smallest part of this group is the ones most like me. They are married to a Taiwanese, have been here, are thinking of retiring here… These are the ones that often arrange to meet and in a few cases have become good friends.
I noticed that when I meet one of my subscribers, or when we start sharing things on Instagram, Line or by email, they want to share their photos and videos and experiences with me. They don’t share as publicly as I do but the need is clearly there.
In three weeks time, I will be flying back to Canada. I have to do a couple more videos for my 29 train stations in 29 days series. And I have to improve my new channel. I’m going to start doing thumbnails.
