0700 beautiful morning and I get a call to a possible intoxicated employee. When I got there he was trying to break into a woman’s car saying his mother was trapped inside. I quickly realized he wasn’t just drunk because his dilated eyes and behaviors. I eventually calmed him down but then he got super paranoid. The ambulance was on the way so I needed time and safe place to contain him. I convinced him to go with me to a small office nearby. The whole way he was up and down mood wise and stumbling, at one point smearing himself against the wall. Once in the office I locked it and began calming him down. I started to radio in my location but the man would start to get worked up, bordering aggressive whenever I used my radio. So i secretly had to text where I was and the evolving situation. I ran into trouble when I noticed my phone had no service in the office. I also noticed the man was starting to fall asleep while foaming at the mouth so I had to do this balancing act of keeping him awake but not getting him riled up. Every time he’s jolt awake he was on another wild planet. He grabbed a computer monitor and threw it against the wall, exploded then grabbed the keyboard and started playing air guitar. I had to play along. Another time he kept trying to grab my crotch. I asked why and he said he wanted some of the chocolates from the box I was holding in my lap…I did get him to confess he had was an addict but he relapsed from stress of taking care of his elderly father, so he drank a 5th of whiskey then took some of his dads Alzheimer’s medication and came to work because he didn’t want to lose his job. I felt his pain because I’m an addict as well and take care of my father. 40 min went by before our location was found in the building, I had started to panic. The employee was detained for resisting and once in the stretcher they found the empty prescription bottle in his pocket. I followed them to the hospital and later checked in with him when he had sobered up and we did the serenity prayer. The next week he was fired. So sad to see so many fellow addicts not make it after doing so well and working so hard. It’s also sad how during the process in public crowds of his coworkers were in our way taking pics and videos on their phone ignoring us and his privacy. Later I saw some of them on social media with really embarrassing comments and jokes. Yes, there were moments when I found myself holding back a chuckle in the moment but I also understood the seriousness of it. I guess it’s the age we live in. Regular people will pull out their phones to record and post for “likes” and popularity but won’t dial 911.
