Day 92 - Up and At Em, Now with Protein! in These Foolish Things

April 2nd - we are well into Spring at this point. Does it feel like Winter kinda skipped us this year, or am I just at that age where the seasons fly by? I don’t want them to fly by.
Speaking of flying, I’m back home from the biz trip! Martini was an angel the whole time. What an incredible companion she is. I am so freaking lucky to have such a good dog by my side. I couldn’t love a creature more.
I want to tell you all about the trip because there’s so much to spill! But I need to get ready for the day first. It’s Tuesday and I have a video call at 8:30 this morning with my agent in China (he flew back yesterday). I gotta do my morning routine, but first I’m sipping on coffee with some protein shake in it before I work out this morning.
On the drive back to [my city], I listened to this podcast with Mel Robbins. Her guest was Dr. Stacy Sims. It was such a great show - essentially debunking some of the “bro science” about working out and muscle gain and how women’s bodies are obviously different from men’s.
As you may know, I’m trying to be as healthy as possible post-cancer and post-carotid artery injury and post-menopause as I ease myself more gently into older age than in previous years (hahah…the previous years where I SWOOPED myself into near death a few times!).
One of the things I’m trying to do is grow my skeletal muscle so that I can improve my bone health, gain more strength and mobility, and keep my independence as I grow older. And I’d be omitting something if I didn’t say that vanity has a little something to do with this as well. I like watching my body change and morph into a more fit human being. Sure, I’ve yo-yo’d with my weight before, but I was definitely “skinny-fat”. This time, not only is it for vanity and fitting into my “skinny clothes” but also for health and longevity. THIS TIME, it matters more than it ever did. THIS TIME IS FOREVER.
Anyway, one of the things Dr. Sims said in the podcast is that, unlike men, women shouldn’t work out on an empty stomach. And I’ve gotten myself to the point where I don’t like to eat breakfast (or much of anything) in the mornings. I am just not hungry. Women’s bodies need at least a little bit of protein (15-30 grams) before doing muscle-building strength training, or all of that effort is for naught since the energy you expend will be taken OUT of the muscle instead of building it. There’s simply no energy in your body to create what you’re building - there’s nothing to work with! I’m paraphrasing and probably getting some of my explanation wrong, but what I got out of the talk was…get some protein before working out!
But mornings are the only time I have to so my main workout. If I don’t work out before I start the rest of my day, my whole day is blown because I’m too tired to do a workout after work. Sooooo....I’m drinking protein coffee. And it’s the perfect time to tap out a little entry and then I can get on with the rest of my day!
So yes, the trip was good - I gotta come back and write about it. I also gotta do all of my expense reports and trip reports and yada yada. You know the drill when you get home from a trade show, right?
Remind me to tell you about my new side-hustle plan. Oh, and seeing Drunk Jesus! Ha!
I’ll talk to ya later!

I "taught myself" to like overnight oats in the morning (I swapped out plain greek yogurt for vanilla and added pistachios and cashew pieces), and it's the highlight of my day. I prep it in batches of three. Keeps me full until lunchtime.

I love overnight oats too! I eat a "breakfast" between 11:30-12:30 that consists of yogurt, a scoop of protein powder, oats, fruit and nuts. It's soooooo delicious. But I also needed this extra boost in the early mornings before working out.

"I couldn't love a creature more" I was just thinking that as I cuddled my cat this morning before getting up for work. He comes under the covers to sleep against my chest like a teddy bear. We are blessed to have our animal companions!
I love a protein breakfast! With adhd, I crash harder from carbs than most people do. If I don't have a high protein breakfast, I'm sleepy all day. My favorite is egg and a mahi-mahi patty from Trader Joe's on toast, or an egg spinach omelette. Unfortunately I hate protein shakes. I have protein bars for when I have to eat on the go, but I truly hate them.
I just bought chia seeds for the first time to try chia seeds and my steel cut oats to see if that works for me. Would be so yummy if it does! Let me know what else you come up with...

Awww, nice note! Love our babies so much - we truly are blessed.
I'll have to look into the mahi-mahi patty situation. I don't eat mammals, so always looking for a good and easy fish option since I'm still not good at cooking my own fish (must take a fish class!).
Tonight I'm experimenting with a protein pasta dish! I've never tried protein pasta, but I'm going to do it for dinner tonight! I'll let you know how it goes!

If I don't read about your side hustle soon I will definitely ask about it :)
Hope headcat wasn't too neurotic this trip.

Podcasts are so good on road trips.

Fat is an energy storehouse and we all have it. The body will metabolize fat before it breaks down proteins.
Good to hear Martini had your back! 😉

Understand, but it works differently in men vs. women.

I’m only regurgitating physiology I learned 35 years ago.
I’m also supplementing protein.
Thank the heavens men and women are different!
