Background Noise
The image embedded in the video for this song reminds me of a night in Kuala Lumpur. I wrote about that night, during my ‘99 cruise on the Constellation back in the bad ol’ OD days. The melancholy song adds to the feel.
Our “admin” was in a five-star hotel, and 40 stories up. Unfortunately, there were ten of us, the “Magnificent Seven” plus some hangers on.
Rules being rules, the first in got dibs on the sleeping arrangements. My running buddy Rob and I were last in. I got a pillow and the floor.
There was a punch out that stuck out of the building, and I laid down there. It was pouring rain, the wind smacking the rain against the windows.
Outside it was hot and humid, but in that alcove, I was cold. The air conditioning was running full blast.
I don’t know what that feeling was. It could be that I was coming to peace with my divorce from my first wife. I laid on my side, the pillow folded under my head and stared at the rain and the buildings below us.
I had never spent a night that high up before, and I am unlikely to ever again. Experiences, you know?
