I don’t know what made me think of it as it happened years ago and I’d forgotten about it but I’m 59 and when I was a small kid in 1970 I was sent to the local corner shop for something. I was very small and skinny and shy.

I didn’t really have ideas about money or cash tills or anything so I’d just hand the money over to the woman on the till and wait for change. I didn’t know about change, how much to receive etc. and was puzzled when sometimes I was given change and sometimes not. ‘’How does she now how much to give me from that big machine?’’ (the till).

One day I stood there patiently waiting for the change not knowing I wasn’t supposed to have any and the sniping old bag snapped ‘’you don’t get any change this time’‘.

I ran out in tears, not because of no change but because she’d snapped at me.

The next time I crept in quietly again but this time I knew there was no change coming and she snapped ‘’oh, you’ve finally realized there’s no change’‘.

I was FIVE and that old vampire had me in tears again!

There was a man in another shop that snapped at me too even though he could see I was barely out of nappies!
