The snow finally came. We are making our way out of it now after a few days of closures and cancellations. The local League of Women Voters was scheduled to have our annual media luncheon yesterday and we have now rescheduled to today. A lot fewer people will be able to comes so that it is sad, but it is what it is. The venue we are having it in is being torn down, which is why we were able to reschedule to the next day.

The theme today is podcasts and two of our speakers were able to make the reschedule so that is a treat. Mrs. Sherlock is even going to come, so I am looking forward to that. A few of the emails from people in the League I have received lately have been curt and I am not taking it personally as I know people are stressed to the max. But still, no fun.

I just look at them and go…really? Okay. If you want to take this all so seriously with all the other stuff going on in the world, fine but really…

On the Zoom call with a good chunk of my dialogue group on Thursday I made a joke that if we wanted to cut costs why don’t we just dissolve Congress as they are not doing anything useful and boy howdy, the other woman on the call got all defensive and ranted about certain congress people and what wonderful things they are doing and saying and on and on and I was like, eek.

The guys all knew I was joking, interesting that.

I was able to tell Walt that there were times lately where his approach seemed tone deaf. It was a term someone else in the group also thought applied. He asked for feedback, it wasn’t like I lit into him or anything, though one of the other guys in the group did go off about privilege. Luckily Walt took it all in stride and we exchanged short favorite love poems to share with our constituents yesterday for Valentine’s Day. I read them both to my students.

This is the Poem of the Day yesterday from the Poetry Foundation.

skint valentine
Tom Pickard

what we have is
what there is
and who we are

and who we is
is love

There are days lately where that seems so absurdly not true. But against all odds I hold this belief. At least among the folks I know.

I have a meeting every day next week, and not fun ones either. The good news is that it is finally above freezing and even though it will be wet a good deal of the week I will be able to get out and about with ease. Something that has been challenging for about three weeks. I can go for walks to blow off steam.

With the rent increase I decided that I am not going to renew the SquareSpace subscription for a website for my classes. I never got around to finishing it. I kept thinking I was going to hire someone to help me. Never happened. I do need to do more marketing as my Monday evening class is often just two or three people but I have come to understand after all this time that word of mouth is the ticket.

This newish student I have, the yoga teacher from B.C. Canada, (she moved there to be with grandkids from Calgary) who is 79 and was in the American Peace Corp in Iran with the husband of one of my local students, has been such a boon for me. She has given me confidence that what I am doing is useful and good. She is so kind, she is infused with kindness. It is a gift.

There has been much laughter at us and our brief encounter with snow. We are such amateurs here at challenging weather. My newest student is also from Calgary. She lives in Victoria now.

Okay, before the luncheon I have a board report to write. Woohoo!

I would like your winter weather - enough snow to be pretty but not dragging on for months! And it does seem like people don’t get jokes anymore. I’ve made a couple of jokingly sarcastic comments to friends on FB that I never dreamed they would take seriously - as in thinking I was serious about what I was saying. I laughed at your Congress joke if that’s any consolation, lol!

Thanks for the poem! It brightened my day. I keep reminding myself that all sorts of love still is. And hold onto it.
