Alopecia update in Life in General

A while back I wrote about how Jessica was losing her hair. They still haven’t been able to diagnose her with anything but she’s on some fancy new medication to help with it.

It’s so new that our insurance denied it, probably because it’s too expensive. But luckily with her being a pharmacist, she understands the ins and outs of the system and was able to figure out that the manufacturer has patient assist programs for this reason and we qualified for it. So they will send her medication free of charge for the next year. Great!

And holy crap is this medication working. In the beginning she had a few small prickly hairs in her bald spots and I was like “well that could just be the residual hairs that haven’t had a chance to fall out yet” to keep our expectations realistic. And there were other bald spots that were still completely smooth, no growth at all. But now…

I don’t want to post a photo or anything but just trust that she’s got a TON of hair growing in. Like insanely fast. And every single spot has new hair coming in. Like really thick hair. i’m so happy for her because it’s been ruining her self image.

I feel like once it’s a bit longer, she may be more comfortable with a short haircut to even things out while it grows back. But even if she keeps it long at least the short hair will cover up the bald spots. So either way she’ll feel a lot more confident.

Now she cannot take this medicine if she gets pregnant again so we’ll have to see what happens.

Speaking of which her OB said that the soonest we can start trying again is end of March. That’s sooner than we thought initially so that’s exciting!
