I’m reading some Updike stories. I love short stories. I like the way they tell so much - it’s as if you get the whole life story in short form - like a good sandwich. I regret letting that book of Salter stories go. And the book of Donald Hall stories. I tried to lend the Salter stories to someone in the book club - I reread it before I took it to the meeting. No one was interested but I think the guy who sells books to the Amish took it. I suppose I could ask the Amish about it but I think his group of Amish is not the same as ours. The Hall book is the one I mailed to Hawaii and then tried to get back and never heard from the woman I mailed it to.
Oh such sad stories.
This Updike is called Trust Me and it’s a blue cloth covered hardback with stories from his middle life. There is a lot about his wives told in various slipcovers. I love Updike. I think he’s my overall, lifetime favorite writer. I wish I knew where I got the book. It’s in good shape. I don’t buy a lot of hardcovers and almost never new ones. This came from a used book store, I’m almost sure. There is no evidence it was ever a library book. The dustcover is gone.
One of my life regrets is not noting inside books where and when I got them, and perhaps what I paid for them too. I dislike writing in books, marginalia, I think it’s called, but after it’s done I like to see it.
I’m not a disciplined person. Too bad.
I’ve put a small pen mark by the stories in the table of contents as I read them.
‘Trust Me’
‘’Made in Heaven’
‘More Stately Mansions’
‘Unstuck’
Book came out in 1987.

Updike is certainly in my top ten. Have you ever perused Thriftbooks.com? I've found some interesting books there at decent prices. You only need to buy a few books to get free shipping.

My son buys my books online. I somehow have never been an online shopper. I have several used books stores I patronize. And library book sales too. Just asked him - he gets books from Thriftbooks.com. Thanks for the reminder. He got me four of Salter's before Christmas - someone had gotten rid of his collection. I'm still missing a few.

I am sure I’ve read something of his but I’m at the stage of not being certain.
Vonnegut is probably my favorite writer.
I love your entries.

Don't think I've ever read him. Or a lot of the authors mentioned here.

You do have discipline. There are lots of chores and work you do regularly. You are talking about adding different record keeping. Take credit for your discipline. I have always enjoyed marginalia.

I do.

Short stories are wonderful things. Stephen King, I think, writes better short stories than novels. I have to give myself a little time between the short stories I read. I need one world to fade before I can enter another.

I have read Updike, but only “The Witches of Eastwick”, which was made into a movie starring Jack Nicholson.
The screenplay however, deviated significantly from the book’s plot.
