Name: Mr. Buy-Your-Own-Coffee
Introduction Platform: Bumble
Age: 57
Relationship Status: Single, no kids. No idea if he’s ever been married. Didn’t sound like it. There’s obviously nothing wrong with that whatsoever, but being on the other side of it does make one wonder…
Job: Civil Engineer consultant. Mainly works with water systems. I told him a story about how my dad had a side hustle once, working with a designer to make a new-fangled kind of toilet, and he was fascinated!!
Lives: North of where I live on the north, north side of town!
Length of Date: 1.5 hours
We Did: Coffee and convo.
He Looked: Meh. Soooo meh compared to yesterday’s coffee date. These dates couldn’t have been more night and day. It doesn’t even matter what he wore.
I Looked: Now…I know I had a great coffee date the day before, but I knew that there might be just as great a potential with this guy! I thought maybe there’s a chance that I meet two GREAT guys on two separate coffee dates in one weekend! So I still took pride in my outfit - even though it was rainy, dreary and cold. I wore light colored denim tucked into fun boots (shorter heels than yesterday), a sweater layer and a pretty hand-knit scarf under a russet-colored trench jacket. Stylish but not dressy.
Convo: There were a couple of cool things, but I was thrown off a little by our initial hello and the fact that he close-talked me while I waited for MY coffee. Notice I didn’t say, “while we waited for OUR coffees”…
High Point: We found out that we’d both lived in Antwerp, Belgium for different periods of our lives! We talked about some of the areas and that he’s going to a wedding there in the Spring AND he’s talking about buying an apartment there in the city center. That’s super cool!
Low Point: The vibes were very off as soon as I walked in the door. He was already there and had a spot when I walked in, and he told me he’d already ordered something to drink before I got there. I thought that meant he was going to go up to the counter with me to buy me a coffee, so I said, “Oh! Okay, I’ll put my bag down in this seat.” so people would know that the table was taken when he’d walk me to the counter to buy me a coffee. But that never happened. I said I was going to put my bag down, and he said, “Okay, I’ll wait here for you.” NO OFFER to buy me a coffee! Don’t get me wrong, I can buy myself a cup of coffee, but… I just thought that started us off in a weird space since he didn’t offer at all. Am I wrong? It just set a strange tone to me. I mean, come on. YOU invited me to have coffee with you - you could BUY ME a coffee!
How It Ended: I was antsy from the get-go. We talked politely, and at the 1.5 hour mark, I made moves like I needed to get going. He took the hint. We both got up and did an awkward hug goodbye and told each other that it was nice to meet.
Chances Are: No.
Date Rating: Meh. D.
