Nov. 22: Pinterest Fail! in These Foolish Things

I started work this morning at 6am, so I decided to call quitting time at about 2:30 so that I could work on the floral brooch that I wanted to use to accessorize for the infamous Black and White party that I’ll be attending in December.

I’ve alluded to this party in a couple of entries now, and a noter asked me to give more details about this party, so I will oblige as much as I can.

My friend Maria - I’ve talked about her a lot, she’s been a work colleague, a mentor, and a friend for many years now - lives with her daughter and her daughter’s family. Over the last two or three years, her daughter has been in the process of building a massive mansion (that happens to look a lot like Versailles), and Maria has been the “live-in granny nanny” of her three grandchildren. I think I’ve told you about this place, right? Maria essentially has a whole wing to herself and it’s over-the-freaking-TOP!

So, for many years before Covid, the daughter has had a HUGE Holiday party that was essentially handed down from Maria, who used to throw these extravagant parties. And I always get invited because of Maria…she always has her people there, too!

So, the parties stopped during Covid and also during the construction of the mansion. But this year, they are BACK AT IT, BABY!! I got the invitation a couple of weeks ago, and it said that the dress is “Festive Black and White” so I have been trying to figure out what the EFF I should wear to this shindig.

This is the time for Dress to Impress. This is the time to throw out ALL the stops! It’s SHOWTIME!!!

But I’m sort of at a loss because I didn’t want to shell out $$$$$ for a cocktail dress that I’ll never have an occasion to wear again.

So I decided to sort of piece some cool things together that I have in my closet. And I was thinking of this super cool, long dress-type thing that you have to wear pants or leggings under that’s all black. It’s hard to describe. It’s kinda like a hi-lo super cool, fluttery thing made of scuba knit fabric, but then I was like…I’ve got all the black, but I don’t have anything WHITE.

And that’s when I decided to see if I could make a beautiful floral brooch that could be a statement piece. I LOVE to make things! And I scoured YouTube and found this video on how to make a flower brooch, and it looked super easy, right? And super cool - extra large and in charge, and VERY much a statement!

So I’ve spent a couple of weeks finding all of the materials and the right fabrics and all of the findings and such, and I spent several hours cutting out the circles (flower petals) and taking every single one of them to a candle flame…the whole nine, right?!

And I spent several hours this afternoon hot gluing hundreds of petals and stitching the little brooch pin onto the back and fluffing this thing up. I wanted this thing HUGE AND FULL!

But, I went way, way overboard. I used too many fabric petals.

This motherfucker looks like a gigantic, fluffy CLOUD instead of a flower! It’s massively bulging and it weighs 50 pounds! It’s insane!

I think it’s the biggest Pinterest Fail I’ve ever created.

Here it is on my dress form so you can see how absolutely ridiculous it is! Ughhh! How hilarious is that?

I have the materials to make another one that’s not as insanely fluffy, but do you think I should even try??

What on earth?!

xox,
GS
