October 2 - Today's Question on Receiving in These Foolish Things

Who in my life, past or present, reinforced the idea that giving is better than receiving?

I think early on in my life, my dad and his side of the family were amazing examples of giving over receiving. My grandma and grandpa were pillars of their church (as was my grandmother on my mom’s side), and they didn’t have much money AT ALL. They were potters at the local pottery factory. I’m guessing they made minimum wage, but they always went above and beyond to help their neighbors and their church congregation.

My parents followed suit. They have always been very, very active in their church, and that’s where I saw so much of their charitable service. They have also always been so kind and giving to strangers. We wouldn’t do it in today’s world, but I remember my parents picking up hitchhikers many, many times in the 70s. They also played a pivotal role in an organization supporting young adults with down syndrome. I had an “experience” once with one of the DS kids, which was traumatizing (stories for another time). I think these things are so memorable because I remember feeling uncomfortable around those strangers, but mom and dad (especially my dad) are helpers, sometimes to a fault!

As I have gotten older, I’ve seen this continue with my family through the years and then through my friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

I have been blown away by the generosity of the amazing people in my life during my medical emergencies over the past five, six years. I could write for days on end of the miracles these people have performed in my life. Angels exist. Truly.

I think that’s why I try very hard to be of assistance and support when friends and family need it. I know I’m not the best and I try to be better every day. I’ve started my personal monthly volunteer events this year and I want to be able to do more in the coming years.

Plus it just FEELS good to give to others in ways that are personal to the recipient and myself. I can always use more good feels in my life!
