Little Things That Can Matter in Scott

Garbage pick-up early this morning. Heard the truck coming and went out to wait for the truck. I joked with the 2 guys in the truck. I thanked them for doing a good job. They appreciated it. Smiled. Was good to see. I do not think that being thanked for such work happens often with them. Looking in the cab of the truck, I saw consoles with many lights and buttons. I was impressed and told them “you got to be some smart muthafuckas to operate this rig!” Another laugh. It felt good.
Early this week I went grocery shopping. I saw a man with a badge and the word, “security” on his chest.BIG guy looking a bit lost. He was new to working that store I could see. I always feel for the security guys because they are hired as bodies to be theft deterrence. I always engage them. I said “hi” to this man and he looked around like, “wow, someone talking to me?” I made small talk with him and his very dull lost-looking face changed and he smiled. It was beautiful. He was a very tall big guy and I think some would find him intimidating. Someone noticed him as a human. Treated him with respect and kindness. THAT matters to me. It is how I like to be treated. I hope he had a good day.
In my simple day each day I try to practice kindness when I can. It gives my life (and that of others) meaning and connection. Even with my 2 birds.
I have a habit of sharing a cup of water with my birds whenever I get a drink. I fill the cup and then offer it to my 2 birds before I drink. They are either eager for it or shy away from it. I get an amazing amount of pleasure with this little ritual. Just as I do offering them what food I eat to them - as long as it is safe for them to eat. It is good practice as a human. Unconditional. If I am not thanked or smiled at, that is fine. The words and gestures add positive meaning to our lives.
