I’ve read quite a few Sci-fi stories along the years, and as this episodes story unfolds I was reminded of a short story I read near fifty years ago, both stores share the same idea but come to different ends. In the short story an astronomer discovers a huge space bird fling toward to our Solar System, when it arrives it visits one of the outer planets, as the astronomer watches the planet brakes open and a chick joins it’s mother, the birds continues to fly deeper into our Solar System, all but one brake open, mother and chicks fly on from the dead egg and continue towards Earth; the last words of the astronomer are ‘the Earth is knocking …….’

I doubt I still have the book, most of my older brown edged books were given away the last time I moved, so I don’t know the stories title or it’s writer! Often several people have similar ideas, I won a second place in a story compaction, I was on an English class for adults, talking with the Judge after I was told I could have won but my story and style was like a certain Sci fi known writer, I couldn’t remember reading that author, and now I cant remember the author; thus is life.

I recall Arthur C Clark writing a story about space ships powered by huge sales used to pushed by the solar wind, he had indented to call the story ‘Sunjammer’ Alas an other author had published a similar story and tiled it Sunjammer; I think Clarks book was published as ‘The Wind from the Sun’ I think ………

‘Note’ Knowing my memory I thought I’d better do some research, Arthur C Clark’s story was published in ‘Boy’s Life’ in March 1964 with the title ‘Sunjammer’ Paul Anderson had a story about solar sale space craft written at the same time, Paul Anderson’s story was included in his book ‘Tales Of The Flying Mountains’ ‘Sunjammer’ being the sixth story, when Clark’s story came out in book form it was tiled ‘The Wind from the Sun’

Wow, I memory was ok on this little nugget from five decades ago; thankfully you can’t see my smug smile ……….
