Business Car or Officer Special trains in Tales of the Jointed Track

Business car trains or “Officer Specials” are the railroads showcases. They are used to entertain new or existing customers, and potential new business for the railroad. The are also used on “Company” business when the CEO and is operating executives are riding the railroad, seeing the operation from the field. For me as an Engineer and as a former Company officer they were a pain in ass. I called them Dog and Pony shows, when I did Locomotive Utilization. Everybody is on pins and needles. The NOC (BNSF at Ft. Worth) and the SOC ( former Santa Fe) this was stressfull, for the Cheif Dispatchers, till it was off their watch. The division people, trainmasters, road foreman, superintendents, the section..signal..Pacing nervous what are seeing or looking to find a problem with. Just being a part of the crew, the Road Foreman is not making it easy, make sure you do this or do that, be gentle getting the dynamic in, don’t rough handle. Hey, let me run like I was taught and have done. Usually that Road Foreman was shitting his pants when I hired out. Go figure, and I don’t want to appear to be mean or condescending, because I have been on both ends of it.

This is a close up of the “Theater Style seating. They can roll up the protective curtain and the guest of honor and executives can watch the scenery from a tiered style seating. The odd looking orange box is the ETD ( End of train Device )

This is where the former Santa Fe and now BNSF house these cars. This is at the old car rebuilding shops. Their own private passenger train garage. At Topeka shops they also do major Class overhauls and rebuilding of locomotives
