Commutes suck. What could take 35 minutes in good traffic can take over an hour in the morning. I dread sitting in traffic, feel so anxious in it, and otherwise feel terrible for a while after. So I decided to try getting up even earlier, cut my commute by a variable amount, not have to worry about being late, and go for a quick swim in the rec center.
I mean, I’m paying tuition, I might as well take advantage of these things, right? All these years, I regretting never taking advantage of the facilities at Rutgers when I lived on campus. I meant to try gymming here my second semester, but I just couldn’t get a rhythm down. I don’t think I could ever do my actual workouts here, I’d get anxious over needing enough time or whether the equipment was available. There’s a high concentration of bros, and I prefer to stay out of their way.
That said, swimming doesn’t feel like exercise to me for some reason. It IS cardio, I do get out of breath, and boy do my arms get tired, but I always always feel de-stressed and energized afterwards. I never feel any pressure to do better or more or faster or whatnot.
I’ll play it out. I could easily get down to a minimal amount of things to bring to the gym, toss my soapystuff and lock in my bookbag. If I’m not mistaken, they supply towels. Towards the winter, walking back to the parking deck to switch out bags will be a pain, and twenty minutes I’d rather save.
