(this is odd because i thought i had already written this---oh well!)----last weekend we spent Friday to Monday in Gettysburg---our first time there and definitely not the last. We had a great time, spent just about all of our time touring the battlefield and STILL didn't see everything!----we stayed at a B&B that had a WWII theme, very quaint!--Gettysburg is a very quaint town, easy to walk around and feel very safe. The battlefield was about a mile from where we stayed, but we drove to it. Mostly because the road to it didn't have sidewalks and if you're walking around the battlefield it's nice to drive to it. The whole battlefield takes up about 26 miles (i think that's what our host told us) and you can do it a number of ways. Hire a private guide to drive your car and take you around, a bus tour, a walking tour, CD in your car tour---each takes about 2-1/2 to 3 hours. Well, we chose the CD in your car---and we spent a good 5 hours and only toured half of it! We did a walking tour the first day and saw about a 1/4 of it. We saw a movie at the Visitor Center (probably a good idea to see it before you tour the battlefield, which we didn't because the line for tickets was REALLY long, hence the walking tour the first day) a cyclorama (a 360 degree painting w/light show---AWESOME!) and a museum. We spent a good 4 hours at the Visitor Center seeing the preceding and could have spent another hour or so, but we ran out of time! Had an awesome french onion soup at a tavern (one of the oldest there) which had an attic room that supposedly was part of the Underground Railroad. We also ate at an Irish pub which had a quartet playing irish jigs---we came in near the end of their set so next time we will make sure to get there much earlier. The weather was beautiful---all in all a great long weekend. Definitely must go back!
