the long waltz in poetry

when we arrived
at this masquerade
we couldn’t just leave
someone already paid
over time, we learned
to dance our lives away
to someone else’s beat

by the time we looked up
it was halfway to the past
our knees were weak
we were fading fast
time for us to reveal ourselves
but we’d become our masks
above our bleeding feet

spike the punch
on the down-low
hold me close
when the songs
are getting slow
til we abscond
to private places
and describe our
long-lost faces

when we arrived
at this masquerade
we could’ve just left
and just hit the hay
at least now we know
it wasn’t written fate
though its far too late
to change
in another life
in another age
I could’ve known
your face and
you could’ve
known mine
but it’s fine
it’s fine
it’s fine
it’s fine
