Nearly a year ago I was called to a hospice situation that resulted in developing a special friendship with a woman 20 years my senior. I cared for her dying mother around the clock for five weeks. What I did in my mind was simply offer care, compassion, spiritual comfort and companionship. In the last two weeks naturally the physical care became more challenging but that is what hospice is all about in a nutshell. What mattered is the mother felt well tended, respected and loved by me as a sister in Christ. To her daughter I was a Godsend, a person who treated her mother as good as she wanted and would if had she been physically capable.

I do have a strong gift of compassion but in this case the Holy Spirit moved me many times to acts of love and compassion that were only possible of Christ. I was only a vessel of His great love. For weeks most of the family hated me, threatened me with lawsuits and arrest, based on accusations and falsehoods they made up just to cover their unwillingness to care for their own mother. By the grace of God I went through that time un-ruffled, and ultimately gained respect from those who had hated.

Over the last year Judy had often commented on how deeply she appreciated the tender care I gave her mother and hoped if she were ever in need I'd consider caring for her. I assured her that I would if it were at all possible. That time has come. Presently she is in the hospital, having had a stroke ten days ago. She can't go home because nobody in the family wants to care for her. They want her in a facility, but I'm pretty certain that isn't what Judy wants nor can she afford to do so. Tomorrow I will go see her and go from there. I don't know what to expect, any more than the day I answered the call to care for her mother. God will let me know what He wants done.

I know tonight Judi is alone, in a hospital, without her mother, father, me or anyone who loves her and she becomes very childlike and afraid. I'm asking you dear Lord to comfort her soul, to let her know you are there with her and that you are also in tomorrow and know all her needs and have already worked them out for her very best. If she is having pain remove it and allow her to rest. Give her the knowledge I will be there tomorrow so her peace of mind will be strengthened. Whatever her needs Lord, grant them now. She's one of your special children and often forgets how to reach for you when she is sick or frightened. Take her in your arms and remind her of the great Father that you are. I ask this in your sweet name, amen.
