I wonder how many tourists in London know where they can gety some excellent entertainment for free - in churches!!! You do not have to be religious - but enjoy good music - check on the services in St Paul's Cathedral, or Westminster Abbey and it is possible to get in for a service free and look round and see the place without paying - although it is nice to give a contribution as you leave. We managed to get to Westminster Abbey, with lots of other people for Evensong at 5 pm - just 45 minutes long - and superb singing - then next day we went to ST Martin's in the Fields ( next to the National Gallery) - and this time there were just four singers, but wonderful. I had to take a picture of the window over the altar.
Unfortunately the lines on the pic do not carry over the whole window - but you can get the impression of a crucifixion. You can have such peace right in the middle of Trafalgar Square
The third Evensong we heard was in Durham Cathedral - the most wonderful building which dominates the city from a range of viewpoints. In this case we sat in the choirstalls near the choir - and again some wonderful music.
And - one exhibition we passed in London was the Society of Women Artists - a pity we did not go in since we might have seen this picture before it was removed from the walls. A naturalistic portrait which shows some pubic hair - but deemed 'pornographic' by some - and pressure was put on the Society to remove it. Unbelievable - but there was concern that children would pass it on their way to an education area. Oh well - we must look after the little ones - I shall return to Rolf Harris, th epitome of the friendly uncle at a later date!!!!
