If you had to lose one of your senses, which one would you drop?
Fun fact, we’re all taught as kids that we have five senses. This is apparently a number that people in the field dispute. I’ve also seen 11, 23, 51…
Things like, the sense of pain, hot or cold (somehow different from touch?), interoception, proprioception.
People with ADHD have a complicated relationship with interoception and proprioception. Ever heard of the ADHD walk? OMFG it’s hilarious to see someone else do it but I 100% have done it my whole life. That’s proprioception at work. We aren’t good at it, so we don’t give our bodies enough space in its surroundings, but at the very last second we figure out we’re on a collision course and correct in the nick of time.
Interoception is being able to understand the sensations in our own bodies. So, like, the urge to pee, or what an orgasm feels like. ND people, more ASD than ADHD to what I understand, sometimes have a hard time with this one, too. I’m only starting to understand how I might have been misunderstanding my bodily sensations my whole life and never knew, because it’s not like you can explain it to someone else.
Jeeze this is a long winded diatribe… only to find out I’d probably give up taste. It’s the most obvious answer.
