The more things change the more they stay the same... in These titles mean nothing.

I found this on the back page of an old notebook.

It was titled 100 Goals and dated 7-16-91.

I got as far as 14.

  1. weigh less than 140 lbs. (ha ha ha I suppose I weight somewhere around 180 right now. I might have gotten below 150 briefly in the years since 1991 but never below 140.)

  2. keep my teeth clean (not a big success there either.)

  3. walk 5 miles most days (I did for a lot of days but I don’t any more.)

  4. talk to my husband (he stopped talking back in 2002.)

  5. do 20 situps a day (what?)

  6. run (if my joints can take it) (another what?)

  7. save some money (I have saved some money.)

  8. remain employed ( I have, not at the same place though. I have had two jobs shot out from under me. I hope that doesn’t happen again.)

  9. eat less sugar ( I gave up sugar 5-1-13 - with only a few minor lapses.)

  10. eat less fat (I don’t pay much attention to fat)

  11. buy a pair of dress shoes that fit (I still need to do that)

  12. get John M. launched (John M. is launched.)

  13. organize my clothes (oh god no)

  14. organize the bookshelf (apparently I only had one at the time. now I have half a dozen and none are organized. neither are the piles.)

Beneath the list of goals on the last page of the notebook is pasted a photo from a magazine. It’s of many people in the surf with a gray sky and foggy misty high-rise buildings in the background.

The caption says: Smog-shrouded Rio: Will heads of state quit quibbling here and strike a historic eco-agenda?
