First week back from LET went well.
Graduation was on Friday the 13th. It was kind of a joke. We all voted for the abridged version because we couldn't wait to see that place in the rear view. Here's my lovely graduation photo that apparently was put on the SDHP's facebook page.
That weekend we went camping with Haley and Tim.
Story of my life. It rained almost the whole time. We also had one severe thunderstorm warning, which meant we were supposed to take cover in the bathrooms with the other campers. Good times. My friend Haley also "assisted" in getting a wasp out of my hair (he got stuck in there somehow). He wasn't agitated until she flicked him three times. I only got stung once. Great friend, lol.
Our pouty-duckface camping selfie in the rain. Note I'm wearing a sweatshirt zipped to the throat, a jacket with the hood up. It was cold and very, very, very wet.
But we survived.
Funny story - as we were loading my car to go camping, Nate left the rear passenger door open while he ran upstairs to grab the cooler. In the 30 seconds-1 minute he was upstairs a white car pulls up behind my car, and two people get out. They walk reaaaaaally slowly past my car, like within a couple feet of the door (the sidewalk there is 10+ feet wide, right?) and they were looking in the open door. Nate was just standing inside the building watching. He walks out with the cooler in his hands and says, "Hey, what's going on?" And these two people give him a deer-in-headlights look and book it to the corner, where they cross the street (4 lanes) and walk back westbound towards their car. They jaywalk back across the street, get in their car and leave. Nate comes upstairs and tells me what happened, which he prefaced by saying, "I might be being unintentionally racist (they were 2 black people) but here's what just happened." We called the cops to report suspicious activity. Because honestly, who does that. We thought, "hey, this was really weird, maybe the cops might want to check it out. Or maybe they have received other reports of these people acting weird. Or maybe they have had some car break-ins in our neighborhood."
The Huron Police (aka Keystone Cops) ask if anything was taken from my car.
"No." I said.
"We can't do anything unless a crime was committed." They tell me. Same thing they told me when I nearly got jumped last summer - the incident that immediately preceeded my decision to buy a 9MM handgun and start carrying it when I go for walks on my own.
"I just thought maybe you would want to check into it. Or might want to pass it along to a detective in case you have had any break-ins or similar reports in this area lately. I have a good description of the people, plus their vehicle."
"Ok, we will pass it on. Click"
This is probably my third favorite interaction with the Huron police, immediately behind the one where I thought I was going to get raped and they didn't care, and the one where I called in a drunk driver and they told me to follow him down an alleyway because they wanted to "know where he was going" but "didn't have an officer in my area"
I guess silly me thought that 90% of police work was deterring crimes from happening.
SIGH.
My schedule is back to normal now. Wednesday night we went to the movie theater to watch 22 Jump Street. We got kicked out halfway through because there was a tornado warning for our area. Instead of heading back to our apartment and climbing into our bathtub and putting a mattress over us we went to Nate's work, which is a concrete reinforced building and has a proper tornado shelter. A EF-2 tornado hit Wessington Springs, which is about 30 WSW of Huron, or about 15 WSW of Nate's parents place. It tore some stuff up and knocked some stuff down but nobody was hurt or killed. The tornado was up and down a few times between Springs and Huron. We didn't see much. A couple spinners/funnels that came down and went back up. You can google "Wessington Springs, SD tornado" and they have some videos and pictures.
That's all for now, <3 Sarah
