Historically wars were waged in order to siphon off wealth and power, and to reduce population.
Since all that is happening already softly, one could easily argue we've been in a world war since we left the gold standard.

I always thought that the cold war was the third world war. A low key world war filled with spies and battles between proxies, but a world war nonetheless.. Just my opinion though.
