The Burns Night Supper was brilliant! I was treated like a queen for essentially doing my job.
The restaurant manager had written me a “script” as a guideline, but had a recording of the Address. I explained to the group I was an expert in whisky, but not accents, so wasn’t even going to attempt it!
We had a 4 course meal (me too, I was seated in the restaurant with them) with a glass of whisky paired to each course. Once I’d talked a bit about Burns, I then explained the whisky to them.
I loved it, it was great fun. Because it was slap bang in the middle of my holiday (I’d offered, I wasn’t asked!) I got a day back, paid for the time I was there, a slap up meal, drivers drams to take away and the manager gave me a bottle of wine as well.
I definitely want to do more things like that, which we should be doing now that restrictions are being lifted.
The shop manager, E, is going on maternity leave in March, and isn’t planning on coming back in the same capacity, so her job has become available and the ad went live this week. I didn’t even think about applying because last time I’d spoken to the supervisor, she was talking about going for it. But when I messaged her when the vacancy went live, she said she’d changed her mind, it was too much admin for her and she loves customer facing. I asked her what she thought about me applying and she told me I had nothing to lose and she thought I’d be good at it. I spoke to my other friend, Rowan, and he said he’d applied, but he didn’t have any problems with me going for it as well. I had lots of encouragement from my family as well.
So I’m going to put in for it! The wage isn’t on the website, which leads me to believe it might be negotiable. It’s more responsibility, but I wouldn’t be on my own as I’d have the hospitality manager and events manager on site most days I’d be in, plus my supervisor. All my colleagues are mature, so there’s not really much instruction involved.
I have a 121 meeting next week with E and the events manager on Tuesday morning, so it will probably come up then. Exciting!
