We were the kids who go to go go places and do things, that’s what my dad said. We didn’t need to get “spoiled” with the new clothes and toys the other kids did.
What a boomer thing to say, lmao.
I remember asking for a new game for our super nintendo and I got NO. You RENT them.
I think a while later, he comes in the door with a copy of ‘Wing Commander’. (That was NOT the shit as a 10 year old kid, let me tell you.)
Not Maximum Carnage, Street Fighter, MK, or even Super Mario world.
We were supposed to be ecstatic because “I was thinking of you spoiled brats.”
My dad’s mother was very thrifty and he never missed an opportunity to let us know.
“Oh I didn’t get levis, I got tuff skins.” I just googled those and lol.
He was just like her raising us at times, I remember the only time I’d get toys or things I wanted for birthdays and christmas was from grandma and grandpa and nino.
“NO. I’m not buying that maple syurp, you use KARO syrup..it’s just as good!”
Basically if he ever saw me enjoying myself (being lazy, in the eyes of a boomer) he’d make me go outside or find something for me to do.
I started putting my gameboy in my pocket when he’d force me outside.
Anyway, let’s go to present day dad.
He’s still slow and zombified. Don’t know if he’s on medication as I’m not seeing any bottles around the house, but I am pritttty sure he’s going to stay that way now.
Oh wait I remembered something about ‘old’ dad, it’s funny too.
He took me (made me go) to Big Hat Days in clovis which is basically an extroverted white person thing. Could we do anything there? No. Didn’t have time or it was too much.
There was this peruvian pan flute band there, and I wanted one of those shits, man.
WHat? NO! Y-You’ll get tired of it and [yosemite sam dad ranting].
So that was that.
Years later when I was probably like 16 he comes in the house and he’s all “Heeey look what I got..”
And I said I wanted one of those when I was 10..
“..So you don’t want it now…?”
Back to present day dad. Pretty sure he’s going to be like this forever. I don’t think my brother and him have talked to each other either.
How’m I doing otherwise? Ehh, not bad I guess. Just the whole uh getting older thing and whatnot. I don’t hate my dad, think I told you that before, but there is some animosity there I guess.

Be well, John Spartan(s)
