We flew back from Spain yesterday - sad to leave the sunshine - but real life takes place at home and there are things to be done - and I am writing on a keyboard again which means I might spend less time without the predictive text coming up. And some news as we drove back from the airport - that the Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has called off his impending marriage to the Polish tennis player Caroline Wozniaki - they had got as far as sending out the wedding invitations and he realised he could not go through with it. He said it was now too soon to be making a marital commitment .. 'I wasn't for all that marriage entails'

Here they are - a beautiful couple - getting loads of publicity and getting engaged - he palys golf but never really has to play again - she is one of the top players - the lifestyle is wonderful - but sports stars live on the edge - form can disappear - and McIlroy reckoned at 25 he was too young for marriage. Of course, going round the world shagging a lovely woman, in love, is great - but marriage was a step too far. I applaud McIlroy - he decided to do the right thing as he saw it rather than just go along with everything knowing that in the end his heart was not in it. There is much pain now, especially with all the publicity, and his future relationships will be scrutinised. I can imagine him getting involved with all the wedding preparations and feeling trapped - and not being seduced by all the hype. The question now is will he be able to get his ball in the hole?
