It was in 8th grade. I was chatting with a cohort. I didn’t have a word or formulation for my thought patterns. He said he was atheist.

That night, I looked up the word in the dictionary. Yes, a physical dictionary.

For so long, I just assumed it was just a fiction people laughed along with. People actually think there is some demon out to destroy them? Some invisible person that is looking over your shoulder? That if they just pray, they won’t have to do the work? I don’t understand it, and at this point in my life, I never will.
