Ughh in Everyday Ramblings

If I were a house, I would look like this right about now. Wild sweet peas in the front yard and vines starting to creep onto the porch. I am pretty much fine unless I look in the mirror or at myself on video. I took this picture early this morning on the way to the garden to water.
The weather here is absurd. There was about a half hour this morning where it was slightly cooler outside than inside. I think the hottest temperature I have ever experienced is maybe 107 F. We blew past the historical record of 102 F yesterday without blinking. And today, I am going to be a zombie by the end of it. We are looking at 115 F.
The columbine seeds germinated early because of the heat, so that is one small win.
I have fans and I have blinds and my place is dug into the side of a hill. My guess is I will be able to keep it under 90 F in here by the end of the day. Kes and Most Honorable have a window air conditioner (and a basement) as does Charity and Mrs. Sherlock has the well shaded garden and a basement as well.
It is going to take vigilance to get through July though. We are looking at 8 straight days over 90 F that I know of now. One of my upstairs neighbors has put a big sign next to the doorbells offering cold sparkling water to any delivery people.
And yesterday afternoon there was a box with bottled water out by the mailboxes with a note written on a carboard box holding them with info on how to find cooling stations. At the same time in the intense heat there was someone rummaging through our garbage bins. Charity has put out plates of water for the birds and squirrels to compliment my birdbath.
I may just take a long nap in a little while. Sleep was a bit elusive with warm long cats in a little too close proximity last night.
Covid was good practice for all this, I guess. The staying in bit at least.
We still have twice as many positive tests a day (227 yesterday) as we did this time last year, but our governor is going to remove all restrictions next Friday. 85% of folks over 65 in my county have been fully vaccinated, our hospitalizations are way down and locally, deaths from the virus are rare.
At this point deaths from the heat might be more of a concern.
Mrs. Sherlock fell off her bike again on Friday morning a block from her house. She had a helmet and bike glasses on, and she face-planted. As she was my only live student for the 3PM mat practice she showed me her face. It is a mess, big black eyes on both sides and cuts above her eyebrows. I quickly modified the practice so there was minimal neck movement and no contact with the face and any other surface.
She says the swelling was down by yesterday afternoon. She admitted she was tired. I could have told her that. As we come out of lockdown, she is not the only person I know trying to do too much to make up for lost time. This is her second fall in two months. I fret.
There is seizing the day and then there is being seized by it.
You know, the gym is not that far, and it is air conditioned. If you show proof of vaccination you don’t need to wear a mask. It’s possible if I am only moderately functional tomorrow I might go down there.
This might be a break-out moment for me. Eek.
I am not happy with the way I am eating. The guy that used to live in his car (and now lives in senior housing in a studio) has indicted that he would maybe like to spend more time with me and maybe drive out to the beach. He has a garden plot about the size of mine across town.
I was thinking maybe could share seeds and maybe a meal now and then. The ball here is in my court. He smokes so I am thinking outdoors stuff. I am not interested on any level in getting involved but I do like him, could use some companionship and don’t have a problem with his unusual life path.
Something to noodle when thinking about how to make decisions about food that I feel better about. I think the food thing will stabilize on it’s own but a little nudge in a more skillful direction wouldn’t hurt.
