A is for Abigail.
Abigail is 8 years old and a beautiful, spirited child. She has always been petite. She has always been sensitive. She has always been lovely. Abigail adores horses and recently started taking riding lessons. I do fear she'll fall off one day and break herself, but I'm okay with it because she's broken herself before and lived to tell the tale. When she was 4 years old, she fell off a small slide at preschool. She shattered her elbow and broke her humerus in half. Four weeks later she tripped and fell at home, breaking her other elbow as well. That made for some interesting times (and pictures!). Abigail started 3rd grade this year. She loves school.
A is for Austin.
Austin is 6 years old. He is a happy, active boy. He's the polar opposite of his sister's body type, towering over other kids his age and tipping the scales at 80 lbs. We started calling him Pudge when he was a baby, and it stuck. These days we also call him Smiley Guy, because as I mentioned before, he's a very happy kid. Most days.
A is for Autism.
Austin has Non-Verbal Autism. Our happy, smiley, tank of a boy has never uttered a word in his life. He loves to interact with people, though, and not being able to speak doesn't get him down most of the time. He is truly a gentle soul. Austin attends a special school just for kids with special needs. He just started his 2nd year there, and he loves it.
A is for Adoption.
A few years ago Eric and I started talking about the possibility of adopting a child. We decided when the time was right, we would begin the process to adopt a child in foster care. A year ago, we started the process. This spring we were finally licensed to adopt and were able to begin searching for a waiting child. We have found a teenage girl, who we'll call K, and have been meeting with her. Providing our visits continue to go well, K could be joining us as a foster child in the near future, with us adopting her sometime next year.
So that's a little peek into our lives with plenty more to come. Welcome. Stay a while.
