What can I have pride in?
I find myself feeling rather proud when I formulate a rational opinion with evidence and reasoning. And, even more so when soundly rebutting criticism. Okay; I can make an argument. Is that intelligence?
No, I don’t think it’s intelligence. I know lots of intelligent people who can’t find their butt with both hands. And, my aunt with purported an IQ of 140 is who I’m arguing with. Her reasoning is… faulty, to say the least. She is intelligent, but it would seem that she has failed to use it productively. I mean, I’m sure she’s done some things with it. But nothing enduring… or not much, as far as I can see. She had one kid, divorced twice, raised him as a single mom, went to “school” for 11 years, and then taught on the taxpayers dime for like 40 years. SO.. yeah. Not much in the realm of productivity.
Intelligence is mostly hereditary. So I can’t be (at least, not reasonably) proud of my intelligence. It’d be like being proud of having blue eyes. Which is obviously stupid.
I think I can be proud of how I use my intelligence, though. Firstly, to have reasoned and rational thought. Secondly, to ensure that I live a moral life. And honestly… I think those 2 might just max out my abilities. Not because I’m not gifted in abilities (sorry double negative) but because there is SO damn much to do in this world to be moral.
Ah, well maybe not for everyone. You know, if you’re not that smart, no one can fault you for not being an astrophysicist. But if you’re intelligent… I mean. It’s just kind of a dick move to withhold from the world.
