“I’ll get drinks, what do you want?”
“I’m good thanks.”
“Mojito?”
“Sure, ok. Yeah.”
She leaves me in the cramped sitting room. Drinks were a pretext, ‘I’m good thanks’ is not an answer. If my ass was sensitive it would feel the countless cheeks, the cloistered asses that had come before, hopefully cloistered in Denim, cotton, polyester.
Prints on the wall in garish frames; that sad lady in a drift boat, that portrait of some Dutch guy, Pink Floyd at Stonehenge. The bookshelf, post-retro-modern; Harper Lee, Salinger, King, that creepy gay guy from Oregon. Props. Like asses before, you sit and wait for the drink you don’t want, wonder what the rest of the place looks like, and, sooner or later you open the photo album on the coffee table; the only thing on the spotless coffee table. The only interactive thing in the whole world as the ghosts of other asses will attest.
Thick. A two hundred photo album, four slots on each side of each page, 25 pages. A poloroid in every slot. All the same photo; jet black, like someone left the lens cap on shooting the inside of a windowless cellar. If the other asses could cheat, spoil, sow the seeds of fear and doubt and warning, they might say ‘A few seconds past sinking in, that’s how long it takes to make a mojito’.
“Oh,” she said, placing a coaster on the glass top and a cloudy drink on the coaster “What do you think?”
You don’t need the voice of asses past to raise an eyebrow, or cough. A current ass can figure out on its own how rhetorical the question.
“They are my photos of the future.”
