WARNING!! This will piss someone off, but it’s my favorite movie, and I’m an asshole.

10: Write about your favorite movie, without the title, and how it applies to your life.

This movie was so controversial that I knew I HAD to see it. And I’m so happy I did. It’s my all-time favorite movie.

The controversy alone is something I identify with because I’ve never been in a singular box. I’ve been so many different people in a million situations in billions of topics. For example, one of the craziest quotes that is so relevant to today: Rufus: “A black man can steal your stereo, but he cant be your savior.”

Annnnnnd this beauty.

Rufus : He still digs humanity, but it bothers Him to see the shit that gets carried out in His name - wars, bigotry, televangelism. But especially the factioning of all the religions. He said humanity took a good idea and, like always, built a belief structure on it.

Bethany : Having beliefs isn’t good?

Rufus : I think it’s better to have ideas. You can change an idea. Changing a belief is trickier…

This movie infuriated a lot of people with its blunt truths. I think people were trying to get it banned at one point.

As someone who has lived as a target of racism, this movie helped me understand that I wasn’t alone and that my struggle wasn’t the only struggle.

Even the horrible things came with their own issues:

Bartleby : Well, then, you know, don’t use a gun. Just lay the place to waste, like.

Loki : Easy for you to say. You get off light in razing. You got to stand there and read at Sodom and Gomorrah, I had to do all the work.

Bartleby : What work did you do? You lit a few fires.

Loki : I rained down sulphur, man, there’s a subtle difference.

Bartleby : Oh, yeah, I’m sure.

Loki : Hey, you know, fuck you, man. Any moron with a pack of matches can set a fire. Raining down sulphur is like an endurance trial man. Mass genocide is the most exhausting activity one can engage in, next to soccer.

Maybe it’s just an American thing, but to downplay something on a huge scale like that, especially when, as Loki pointed out, Bartleby just watched, it’s an asinine thing to do. Many people try to tear other’s and their efforts down.

This has happened all my life.

Watching this movie always makes me feel so much better.
