RIP to two influential (to me) authors in Back entries: 2013 - 2015

I know it’s a few days late, but I just felt like posting the following.

Both Sue Townsend and Doris Pilkington Garimara have passed away. For those who don’t know either, Townsend wrote the Adrian Mole series - I remember reading the first one around 1990 or 1991. Doris Pilkington Garimara was the author of Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence about her mother Molly. As a child, Molly and a couple of other girls who decided to leave the Moore River Settlement and walk home to Jigalong via the Rabbit Proof Fence.

I remember coming across the book through seeing advertising for the film. I remember a certain person telling me “it sounds rubbish - three kids just walking”. But the story is so much more than that. Three young girls just wanting to be with their families, and not only struggling to survive the harsh trip through an unforgiving landscape but to avoid recapture during the Stolen Generations time.

Doris passed away from cancer, Sue from a stroke. Both on the same day. RIP to Doris and Sue.
