I'm from the government, and I'm here to help in For Public Consumption

Went to a resume-writing seminar at the Employment Commission yesterday. There were only six of us in the class. Time to bang my head on the desk...

"Make sure your cover letter is something interesting, so the HR people pick your resume." "List your education, with your GPA." "When you add your education, list your GPA."

So, after the first break, I asked whether the GPA was still important if it'd been well over a decade since I finished college. "I didn't say to include your GPA!"

sigh

Then onto the cover letter, I asked how important it was with so many companies using solely online applications. "They're still important!" "I can count on one finger the number I've seen before interviewing somebody." quizzical look

As the time went by, the cliches got worse. At the end, she told me that I "really should start [my] own business."

headdesk

I don't think I'll be doing that; I just wanted to know if I'd be better off adding a ton of searchable terms to my resume to see if it gets hit.

Does anyone know if Office Open XML has a place where you could embed things, while sticking to two printed pages?
