So I need to come up with a name for my company. If I'm going full time in four months I need to start putting things together; get myself registered with HMRC, get the marketing planned and ready to roll etc. So I need a name. I'm mainly going to be doing dog walking and pet sitting, so something that revolves around that.

At the moment I'm using Safe And Hound Midlands (Safe and Hound has already been nabbed) but it's too long and clunky. I want something short and snappy and it's obvious what I do. Jay thinks I should have a clever name like Safe and Hound, but I reckon it would be better if I had a simple, self explanatory name, like Michelle's Pet Services (which has also already been taken, as has Michelle's Pet Care Services. Michelle's Furry Friend Care seems to be available...). Also, we came up with a massive list of clever puns but they were ALL already taken, we couldn't find one that someone else hasn't already thought of.

What do you all think? If you were looking for a dog walker or a pet sitter, what sort of name would you like them to have?

Jay made a yummy dinner last night. Haggis lasagne (yes, really!) with garlic ciabatta and fresh salad. It was delicious, I'll have to see if I can find a vegetarian haggis anywhere and get him to make lasagne with one of those.
Bored at work again. It's looking very likely that our admin lady in Maidstone is going to be made redundant because they're closing down the office there. So annoying, I wish they'd make me redundant instead as I want to leave and she doesn't, but this is the main office and they can't expect her to travel to Birmingham from Maidstone. Gr.

There are a few around here but the quirky ones are the ones I could name: Barking Mad, Rover Poppins, Walkies, Four Feet.

A lot depends on how you want to expand - if you want to take on other people, don't use you own name. If you want to franchise it, you'll need something catchy. If it is just you, I don't think it really matters what you call it, but you want it to be easy to remember.

Ooh I hadn't thought about expanding, it's daunting enough thinking about being a sole trader; taking on employees or franchises sounds too complicated to me, lol

Thanks for the suggestions :o)

I thought of Sit, Stay and Play, but googled that and there's already a Doggie Daycare Centre with that name in America. At least it has the right idea though. What about something like Michelle's Doggie Daycare? Simple, but fun, light hearted and explains what you do. Good luck with your new business. :)

Lol yeah that's the problem, most of the good names are already taken :o) Thanks!

I think most if the good names had been suggested first time round and were already taken :-(

I know, it's tough, and annoying! :o(

I don't have any off the top of my head, but I shall try and think of names for ye.

How does one make haggis into lasagne?

Bomb Shell Miso Honey ⋅ April 08, 2014

Ah thanks, just an idea of what sort of thing you would look for in a dog walking service :o)

Just mash it up and use it instead of minced beef, I was pleasantly surprised.

What about Pawsative Solutions? Something with pawsative would give it an upbeat happiness while leaving it open to any pet with paws so you could do cats as well.

That's excellent, I love the pun :o) Thanks!

To what degree are the 'good names' taken? There are businesses in America with the same name as mine, but as they're not registered with Companies House, I was free to use it myself.

Bomb Shell Tuesday's Child ⋅ April 09, 2014

Well, every good name I think of, I Google it and it's already being used by someone else. I didn't think it should be a problem if it was outside of the UK, but I've also heard of companies being sued by companies in other countries for using the same name as them, so I wasn't sure where the law stood on it.

Might be worth asking citizen's advice or HMRC, they were helpful for me at start-up.. I'll have a think about some names for you anyway!

Lucretia April 09, 2014

I'm not sure about company names, but when you register your website make sure it's something like 'pet sitting leicestershire', or a term that directly relates to what you do. Something that people would type into Google - honestly, it'll make a world of difference to your SEO rankings x

Thanks for the tip, that's what I was thinking, something straight to the point. Jay wanted me to have something clever and pun-like but I wanted something simple and descriptive. I've just found that Shellie's Pet Services is available; I would prefer to have something with Michelle in it but that's such a common name it's already been used for everything!
