Behold, Darth Elsa! in The Stuff That's Not Interesting But Is The Most Interesting Stuff I'll Write

Remember how I used the word “irrational” in the title of the last entry? It seemed to be self-fulfilling prophecy. As it got down to the wire, he never actually messaged me back so I was left with a choice, cancel the trip or go by myself.... If you’re a long-time reader, you’ll know that my motto is “never let the absence of another person stop you from doing what you really want to do”, so I am sitting by myself in my resort in Palm Springs writing this.

It’s kind of nice here. California is still battling the epidemic with all the determination of a five year old trying to tell you a story. The governor shut down Los Angeles, which I passed through on my way here, but I only stopped in Playa del Rey to see Angie, Eric and their son, Aldric, who was so sweet. He remembered my name and got really sad that he couldn’t come and give me a hug because we were social distancing. Angie and Eric were letting Aldric proudly run around in his Elsa costume from Frozen because “he likes capes and shawls”. I just smiled at her and said, “Show him a Stevie Nicks video....”

Angie and Eric invited me over for a vegetarian BBQ and I found it so touching, and also astonishing. They can remember my dietary restrictions but my mother, who raised me on the diet, has to constantly be reminded. Yet another example of how much better I fit with my LA friends.

Later, Aldric came out, still in Elsa gown and cape, but he accessorized it with a Darth Vader helmet and called himself “Darth Elsa”. It was pretty funny.

As is typical for Southern California, it took me an extra hour to get from Los Angeles to Palm Springs because they closed random freeway entrances that required me to take the wrong freeway and double-back, make loops and constantly rearrange the directions in that shitty Waze app.

Since I don’t have the pressure of being with another person, I figure I’ll take this week to finish editing my novel and rework the ending. It’s nice and quiet here, and it’s exactly what I needed. A break from the constant nagging of familial obligations.

I hope everyone has a good week. I know I will.
