My mother’s name on the open diary and then here.
SLOWPOKE
Born in Hawwaii. Her dad was in the army and her mom worked as a nurse.
She wrote on the open diary all about her life. A treasure.
I don’t recall early life with her. The older I get the less I remember. I think we are all like that.
I remember she liked crafts . Making Christmas ornaments and she crocheted hats for the homeless. She did other crafts too.
She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles. She liked watching PBS. She had a large record collection, a large salt and pepper collection. A large mug collection, a large tin can collection and an even larger book collection.
As a kid I recall playing kick the rock to and from the grocery store (she didn’t drive so we walked everywhere).
She was the BEST mom any teen would love!!!!
She let my boyfriend spend the night when I was 15.
She let me and my friends smoke, toke and drink in my room and leave the house at all hours.
She was civil with my friends and accepted them as they were.
I asked her once if she would do the same thing again if given the chance and she said yes.
She was a wonderful mother friend… even hitch hiked with me once!
When I got married we would have great conversation on the phone for a few hours every time I called.
Every time I came to visit we always did a jigsaw puzzle or two.
I don’t ever recall hearing a I love you but I know she loved me. And much later in life did we hug.
I always saw her with a positive attitude. She let things rolloff her and would tell others to not let such and such bother them, etc.
She wasn’t outgoing or very social, (lack of driving probably had a lot to do with that). And what few friends she did had, have since passed. That seems to be the bummer of living a long life. All your friends and acquaintances die before you.
When she turned 90, she knew most people don’t live to be 100 so she figured she had 9 years left at the most. And then she got depressed and feeling lonely. And she refrained from eating at times and lost a slew of weight. And overall not taking good care of herself.
A few weeks ago she lost the ability to walk. She went to the hospital and it was found that she had a major UTI and a 8mm Kidney stone. Initially she refused treatment and 3 days later in the mist of intense pain she agreed to getting it out. Because of the infection she got a stent. Last Wednesday she went Hospice care and today she passed.
We didn’t expect her to go so fast she was just saying last week about going home even though we knew that would not be the best thing for her.
Now she is out of her pain.
She was the best mom and she will be missed.
Now I am an Orphan
One of the things she will most be remembered for is her LOVE for chocolate. Mostly Hershey’s kisses and See’s Candy. But she also loved chocolate cake, chocolate pudding and Haagen-Dazs chocolate ice cream and sometimes chocolate peanut butter. She also loved VERY peanut butter fudge. And my Egg Nog Cookies that I mailed her many times every fall. But most importantly CHOCOLATE!
